Day trading for a living is a dream that many wannabie traders nurture. Is it really possible to live from trading? And what do you have to do, to be able to live from trading?
As a matter of fact, there are a lot of people who are supporting themselves through trading. And some of them are doing it very succesfully. But it is also important to remember, that many of the traders have experienced a total financial wipeout. This number is much greater than the number of successful traders.
There are some very simple rules that you should consider when trading, and especially if you want to live from it.
- Use a trading plan: Make sure that you have a plan for your trading. This way you will always know what to do in every situation, and you will be less prone to react on feelings.
- Follow your plan: This is the most common mistake done by traders. They have a suitable plan, but they somehow decide not to follow the plan. Or they are plain undisciplined, and therefore not following it. If you make sure that you follow the plan, the chances are much higher that you will succeed as trader.
- Determine when to buy and sell: You should always decide by which price you will buy or sell a stock. This is a great way of securing your money from extensive losses. Use stop-loss orders if applicable.
Trading is really a lot about discipline. You have to be very disciplined to sell when the stock is going down. When it has arrived at your decided threshold, it is easy to think that the stock will soon rise… just a little more then it will definitely go up. This is of course not the way to do professional trading. If you have decided to sell at a certain value, then you have to do it when the stock arrives at this value. No excuses. Just do it.
Instead of stock trading, you could also consider forex trading. Forex is a short for the foreign exchange market. On it you can trade on currencies, or rather currency pairs. This is a very volatile market and it is also a very interesting market for day traders, since it is open 24 hours a day.
