Stay Calm

Maintain composure during times of stress is a key factor to maintaining control. This will allow a person to mentally take a step back and view the problem rationally, rather than making rash (and often regrettable) decisions. This may sound like common sense advice, but it is often easier said than done. Financial difficulties are often very emotional problems, but they are the type of difficulties that must be dealt with in a rational and practical manner.

The best way to do this is to take a step back and force a new way of thinking into the situation. The debt should be viewed as a problem just waiting on a solution. Acknowledge that the solution will take both time and effort and then develop a plan of action to conquer it.

Create a Plan

After beginning to look at the debt rationally, the next step is developing the plan that will either eliminate the problem altogether or bring it down to a comfortable and manageable level. For instance, the best way to eliminate credit card debt is to pay off the smallest balance first and work your way up to finally paying of the largest balance last.

The first step of the plan is to find extra cash. Try cutting out extra daily/monthly/weekly expenses that are unnecessary to daily living and redirecting the funds to the debt or to savings. Create a strict, though still livable, budget. Cable is something that can be redirected, as well as fast food or eating out. Living more economically will go a long in regard to dealing with debt.
